I am working with Dr. Riccardo Gottardi to engineer an in vitro tissue model of the articular bone-cartilage interface. We are using a high-throughput bioreactor to create a favorable environment for proliferation and chondrogenic/osteogenic differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) inside PLLA (Poly-L-Lactic Acid) scaffolds. In particular, I am interested in a catabolic osteoarthritis (OA) pathway within our stem cell-based model using the inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. Another goal of my research is to compare the biochemical responses of engineered tissues to OA-like catabolic events.
